About Bantu: Our Name and Logo
At Bantu, humanity is the focus.
This is evident in everything we do and stand for, including our logo. We do not exist in a vacuum. We are named and built on the foundations that embody freedom from the shackles limiting humanity. The Bantu logo is a combination of the Adinkra symbol and the wordmark “Bantu”.
Fawohodie is an Adinkra symbol meaning independence, freedom and emancipation. Adinkra are Ghanaian symbols that represent concepts or aphorisms. Its full expression is: Fawohodie ene obre na enam. The literal translation is: Independence comes with its responsibilities. Essentially, freedom and independence come at a cost and people must be willing to bear the responsibilities of being emancipated.
The word Bantu is based on the reconstructed Proto-Bantu term for “people” or “humans”. The word was coined from the plural noun class prefix *ba- categorizing “people”, and the root *ntʊ- “some (entity)”.
Ubuntu (Zulu pronunciation: [ùɓúntʼù]) is a Nguni Bantu term meaning “humanity”. It is often translated as “I am because we are”, or “humanity towards others”. In Zulu: “umuntu nt ʊ ngumuntu ngabantu”. In Xhosa: “umntu ngumntu ngabantu”. It is often used in a more philosophical sense to mean “the belief in a universal bond of sharing that connects all humanity”.
